There is a dedicated breast screening unit providing pleasant, private surroundings for patients. It is well equipped with three mammography machines and two state of the art ultrasound machines. This Unit is supported by radiologists with a special interest in breast imaging. The Barnsley breast screening programme has a screening population of 41,437 women with an excellent uptake rate of 80+%. There is a requirement that the breast surgeon regularly collects and submits surgical data for BASO to the regional QA reference centre.
Each year the screening and symptomatic services together identify over 200 new cases of cancer of the breast in Barnsley. Breast services in Barnsley compare well with regional and national standards and the new expanded unit opened in September 2003 within the new Women & Children’s Department. Breast cancer patients are offered a comprehensive range of services including Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy and breast reconstruction. Oncoplastic MDT occurs every two weeks and microvascular reconstructive surgery is performed in collaboration with our plastic colleagues in Pinderfields.
