Lecturer in Geography: (Company Name - Subscribers only)
York St John is an ambitious, modern university at the heart of historic York and there has never been a more exciting time to join us.
As one of the fastest growing universities in the UK over recent years, we have a new strategy for the next decade, emphasising our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to creating a fairer world, and a more prosperous region. We are putting inspirational learning and impactful research at the heart of this strategy, recognising our academic expertise as our greatest asset.
The School
Geography, located within the School of Humanities, is an ambitious and growing academic unit. Our burgeoning national and international research profile, excellent teaching and learning, and welcoming and inclusive ethos supports an exceptional student experience. Our taught provision intentionally works across the traditional human/physical ‘divide’, with BSc Geography, BA Human Geography and BSc Environmental Geography degrees. At postgraduate level, we coordinate the interdisciplinary MA Environment and Social Justice, which brings together staff from across the Humanities and beyond, and we have an MSc programme in development. We aim to offer an inclusive, supportive environment for all our geographers, students and staff.
The role
We are seeking a lecturer with expertise in cultural geography to contribute to our vibrant undergraduate and postgraduate offers.
The post-holder will be required to teach across undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Teaching is likely to include the level 5 ‘Landscape and Culture’ and level 6 ‘Human Geographies of Nature’ modules, and contribution to the MA Environment and Social Justice. Capacity to attend residential field trips (in the UK and/or overseas) is essential. Teaching-related duties include module leadership and associated administration, setting and marking assessments, and the provision of pastoral and academic guidance to students. The successful candidate will be supported in developing a solid research profile. You will be joining a relatively small team of staff who enjoy working together to provide a high quality experience for our students, and who are all active in research and publication. The post is available from January 2025.
Key requirements
A doctoral qualification, with expertise in cultural geography, is essential. Candidates should have some prior teaching experience and be able to demonstrate ongoing commitment to research and publication. There will be a clear expectation that the successful candidate will work towards Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy if this is not already held.
