Job Title: GP Assistant (GPA)

Reports to: Practice Manager / GP Partner

Hours: 37.5 hours /week

Salary: Dependent on experience

Role Overview

The GP Assistant (GPA) supports General Practitioners (GPs) in the smooth running of the practice by performing administrative, clinical, and technical tasks. This role is designed to reduce GP workload, allowing them to focus more on clinical care.

The GPA acts as a vital link between the GP, patients, and other healthcare professionals, contributing to the delivery of high-quality care.

Key Responsibilities

1. Administrative Support

– Preparing patient notes for clinics, including summarizing medical histories and recent consultations.

– Managing correspondence, including hospital referrals, discharge summaries, and test results.

– Ensuring coding of medical records is accurate and up-to-date.

– Handling patient queries and coordinating follow-up actions, including booking appointments or arranging tests.

– Maintaining accurate records and filing information appropriately.

2. Clinical Support

– Chaperoning during GP consultations, as required.

– Carrying out basic clinical triage and observations such as blood pressure, temperature, and pulse readings

– Assisting with chronic disease management reviews, e.g., asthma or diabetes checks, as appropriate and within competency.

– Preparing examination rooms and equipment for consultations or minor procedures.

3. Workflow Management

– Managing the administrative side of patient care, ensuring that documents such as referrals and test results are actioned promptly.

– Streamlining patient pathways by coordinating with other departments, such as secondary care or community services.

4. Communication

– Acting as a liaison between patients and clinicians to ensure smooth communication.

– Supporting patient education, such as providing information on self-management of minor conditions or lifestyle advice.

– Ensuring confidentiality and data protection policies are upheld at all times.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential:

– Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

– Strong IT skills, including proficiency with clinical software i.e SystmOne

– Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

– Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

– Understanding of confidentiality and safeguarding principles.

Desirable:

– Experience working in a healthcare setting or GP surgery.

– Understanding of medical terminology.

– Previous experience in an administrative or assistant role.
