The Island Engineer is responsible for looking after all aspects of the Islands power and water systems as well as the islands small fleet of vehicles.

The range and importance of the role is considerable, ranging from large scale repair and maintenance projects to minor works, annual and cyclical servicing as well as responsive maintenance, all carried out to the highest standards.

An experienced generator service engineer with electrical knowledge will be considered and the ideal candidate will also have previous experience of Combined Heat / Power CHP and water treatment systems.

Key Accountabilities

To maintain and service the islands power and water supplies ensuring supplies are uninterrupted.

To ensure that the islands vehicles are maintained and available for daily use.

To forward plan maintenance, repair and improvement programmes in conjunction with the islands needs and within pre planned budgets

Skills

Excellent cross disciplinary skill set, controls, mechanical and electrical. The Island Engineer will require service, maintenance and repair experience on Generator sets and associated control systems, CHP units and will have previously worked as a Generator Service Engineer or CHP Engineer. A working knowledge of Water Treatment Plant and vehicle repairs is desirable.

Education

To be considered for this position, you must hold a relevant engineering qualification (mechanical apprenticeship or ONC preferable). Those with CHP training and a relevant engineering qualification are highly desirable. Those with a marine engineer, ex-Army or Royal Navy background will also be considered.

Minimum Work Experience

  • Previous industry or field based experience within the Generator / CHP engineering industry with mechanical and electrical experience.
  • You will have a strong background in generator, CHP or marine engineering.
  • You ideally will hold a relevant engineering qualification or mechanical apprenticeship.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Contract Duration

This is a permanent position.

Location

This position will be live in on Lundy Island, accommodation, all utilities and transport provided.

Benefits Package and Salary

The Benefits package includes Accommodation for you and your partner, all Utilities (Council Tax, Electricity, Gas and water), Sea and Helicopter Transport to and from Lundy, and a staff discount scheme Salary – Subject to experience, but in the range of £30,500 per annum paid monthly in arrears.

SPOUSE/PARTNER:

The spouse or partner living with the successful applicant on the Island would be required to undertake general Assistant duties which primarily involve the cleaning of the letting properties, but will include assisting in the Tavern (kitchen and counter), the Shop and other areas as required by the Island Manager. Remuneration for this post is currently £20,158 per annum. Both parties would have to sign a joint contract of employment whereby each partner can only remain on the Island whilst the other partner is employed by the Trust. This is necessary to make effective use of the limited number of houses available for staff on the Island.

Working Hours

Generally from 8am until 5pm, five days out of seven. However, work on the Island is part of a way of life and all staff must expect to have to work outside of these hours as and when the need arises. Generally in the summer with large numbers of visitors to the Island, staff can expect to work up to 50 hours per week. In the winter the hours are less demanding to compensate.

Holidays

The holiday entitlement is 28 days per annum including statutory holidays.

Sick Pay

During the first three months of employment or the probationary period (whichever is the longer) you will only be paid your Statutory Sick Pay entitlement. After this period you will receive full basic pay during any sickness absence up to 20 days in any 12 month period. The Statutory Sick Pay will be included in this sick pay. Where absence exceeds seven consecutive calendar days and in certain other circumstances, a doctor’s certificate will be required.

Pension Scheme

You will be auto-enrolled into Lundy’s pension scheme.

Medical Health

Private health insurance, currently with BUPA, will be provided when you have been with Landmark for a year.

Notice

The appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of an initial six month probationary period, though this may be extended if more time is needed to assess suitability for employment. During this period the post will be subject to a week’s notice on either side. A minimum of three months’ notice in writing on either side applies after the end of the probationary period.

Health & Safety

All staff are expected to observe all health and safety at work regulations as set out by Landmark in accordance with statutory requirements.

General Information:

Lundy is owned by the National Trust but leased to the Landmark Trust who is responsible for its administration. The Landmark Trust is an independent charitable Trust which specialises in the rescue and restoration of buildings of historic interest or architectural importance. Lundy is situated in the Bristol Channel some eleven miles off the North Devon coast. It is of granite and rises steeply out of the sea to a height of some 450 feet. It is 3.5miles long and 0.5mile wide and is mainly rough pasture and maritime heathland together with clumps of rhododendron on the east side. There is no arable farming but there is a flock of ewes. There are wild sika deer, soay sheep and goats. The Island is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and the waters around Lundy have been designated the country’s first Statutory Marine Conservation Zone and is a candidate Special Area of Conservation. There is no indigenous population on Lundy. The people that reside on the Island all year round are employees of the Landmark Trust and currently consists of 26 people. During the season, the staff numbers are increased with seasonal staff and volunteers. The staff accommodation varies with one to two bedroom properties, either stone-built or some properties in a timber-clad building known as Quarters.

There are 24 self-catering cottages and a camp site on the Island which can be booked for holidays throughout the year. During the summer there can be up to 130 staying visitors on the Island and on days that the Oldenburg visits, there may be up to 250 day visitors as well.

The Island has to be entirely self-sufficient in respect of utility services. There is a small diesel driven generator house, a central water supply and sewage system. There is also a small shop, tavern and church. Television reception is very good.

Lundy has its own passenger and supply vessel, the MS Oldenburg, which services the Island. The ship operates April to end of October for passengers, sailing from its home port of Bideford and from Ilfracombe. Throughout the year including winter, Oldenburg operates as a cargo ship and brings all food stuffs, building materials, plant, spare parts, fuel oil, animal feedstuffs, laundry etc. to the Island.

There is a winter helicopter service which flies from Hartland Point to Lundy on Mondays and Fridays November to end of March.
